In April 2002 ASC Ltd carried out a rapid archaeological desk-based assessment and an historic building survey on Building A, at Shenleybury Farm, Shenleybury in Hertfordshire, in advance of its conversion into offices and the creation of a number adjacent car parking spaces. Building A is one of three remaining farm buildings at Shenleybury Farm, as other buildings have already been converted into dwellings. Although Building A is currently in a poor state of repair, it remains clear that its function had changed since it was originally constructed, as there are at least three phases within its structural development.
Building A was an early - mid 19th century large 2-storey timber-framed barn with 12 bays. It rested upon brick footings and was weather-boarded The barn was extended between the mid to late 19th century with two bays at its west end and a large opening in its south elevation
By 1898 the barn had been extended along its south side. Its structural timber post and its king post roof trusses still remain within the later concrete block walls and the 20th century roof. Building A then probably functioned as a dairy.
The current single-storey, concrete block structure along its south side dates from the 1950's or 60's. Its interior was divided into individual units with feeding troughs, and each had its own doorway to the exterior of the building. This part of the building was used as a piggery.
