Desk-based assessment, a study of the recorded history and archaeology of a site, is undertaken to evaluate its archaeological potential, and in order to determine the need for and nature of any archaeological work that may be required in response to development proposals. It involves consultation of a broad range of sources including historic maps, aerial photographs, archaeological journals and databases. The resulting report will assess the likelihood and possible nature of any archaeology present, and the risk the development may pose to it.
Under current legislation, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are often required in support of planning submissions, in order to ensure that the potential environmental and archaeological impacts of the proposed development are understood, and can be addressed before or during the development process. ASC is experienced in carrying out the desk-based archaeological and historical studies that form the basis of an EIA, and can also provide a full range of supporting non-invasive archaeological investigation techniques, such as landscape survey, geophysical survey and fieldwalking.
