Geophysics

geophysicsGeophysical survey is an invaluable aid to planner, developer and archaeologist alike, enabling rapid, cost-effective and non-intrusive investigation of the shallow subsurface of sites.  It is routinely employed during the initial stages of an evaluation, to assess the archaeological potential of areas subject to proposed development.

Whatever the nature of your geophysical requirements, ASC offers prompt, friendly, expert help and advice.

ASC staff will be pleased to design and implement programmes of survey using any of the following techniques:

• magnetometry

• electrical imaging

• magnetic susceptibility

• electromagnetic

• resistance

• ground penetrating radar

Magnetometer survey is the method most frequently used to rapidly determine the presence or absence of archaeological features, such as infilled ditches or kilns, and to provide a plan of their form and spatial extent. The other methods are more usually used to enhance the interpretation of a site through the location of masonry, voids, services, other modern intrusive human activity, and definition of areas where specific activities may have occurred.
